At the University of Calgary, we have rolled out over 1200 sites to a large Drupal client community. In this presentation we will discuss our experiences beyond the technical implementation – a support model was created to ensure that our clients adopted Drupal and felt comfortable maintaining their own sites.

Network Manager is an Aegir-esk concept of one site that helps you manage the development of a larger group of sites as a site admin. It’s being born out of a proprietary internal project called course manager used to have one site be able to replicate others in a loosely defined network. Network Manager teams up with the Network Connector module to allow an admin to get a high level overview of all the sites they care about on the same server.

More and more organisations are shifting to Drupal. While this represents a great opportunity for Drupal shops, it also presents some very significant technical challenges.

The “migrate” and “table wizard” modules represent the most powerful framework available today for migrating CMS-based sites to Drupal. It is even better than some of the CMS-specific solutions since it allows you to inspect the data, iteratively import it and clean it up, and then do QA by comparing “before and after”.

In this presentation, we will discuss implementing Drupal to over 1200 sites maintained at the University of Calgary. This will include, the WCM selection process, architecture and configuration along with our fail over processes. We will also discuss migration strategies when upgrading Drupal versions, along with overall lessons learned.
